Microplastics

Microplastics

Microplastics are pervasive pollutants detected in our water, air, and soil. We can even find them in everyday items such as drinking water and glitter used in children's art projects. Since the onset of mass production of plastics in the 1950s. An astronomical amount of plastics has been produced, an article written in 2019 estimates it to be totaling approximately 9 billion tons. Shockingly, about 91% of this plastic has been discarded in nature or landfills. This trend has led to the emergence of microplastics, which are small plastic particles with a diameter of less than 5 mm, that can originate from several sources, including the breakdown of larger plastic items, cosmetics, and industrial processes. Despite their ubiquity, our understanding of their impact on human health is insufficient.
