Deforestation in Brazil's Amazon declined, report says
Deforestation in Brazil's Amazon declined by 34% in the first half of 2023, reaching its lowest level in four years. Preliminary data from Brazil's national space research agency showed that 2,649 square km of rainforest were cleared during the period, the lowest since 2019. President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva's tougher environmental policies contributed to the decrease, as he aims to end deforestation by 2030. However, the challenge remains, as the area cleared is still significant, and the annual peak in deforestation and fires from July to September lies ahead. The government is implementing measures to strengthen law enforcement against environmental crimes and promote green economic development to achieve its pledge.
Have a wonderful weekend!!
